Are you looking for a cute little pet that’s a little unusual but a lot charming? A sugar glider may be the right option for you! Read on as a Potomac, MD vet goes over some key care basics for these guys.
Sugar gliders look a lot like flying squirrels, though technically they are not the same animal. They are usually between nine and 12 inches long, with cute fluffy tails. They are quite gentle and are also very clean pets. They live about 12 years in capacity, which is longer than many other small animals.
Sugar gliders are very sociable pets, and they really should not be kept alone. We recommend having at least two. You’ll need to house same-sex pairs together, of course: otherwise, they will mate.
It may take your little buddies time to warm up to you. One thing you can try is getting a hoodie with a pouch in it, and letting your pets hang out in there. You can also walk around holding your gliders, or play with them. If you really want to pamper your cute pals, get an apron and decorate it with sugar glider ‘musts’ like ladders and hammocks.
Sugar glider cages should be more tall than wide. You’ll need to take care to keep it clean. We recommend removing waste and uneaten food daily, and giving more thorough cleanings about once a week. Location is also important: you don’t want your tiny buddies too isolated, or in a spot with a lot of commotion. Ask your vet for specific care tips.
Your sugar glider can have commercial food for his main meals, supplemented with fresh produce. These guys love sweets! You can offer things like apple juice mixed with water, dried fruit, and yogurt drops, though you don’t want to go overboard here. You can also offer your pint-sized pals a mix of honey, meat, eggs, and supplements. This is called Leadbeater’s mixture, and can be frozen in ice-cube trays. Do not give your gliders anything that contains garlic, onions, chocolate, or xylitol. Foods that are high in oxalates, such as berries, spinach, carrots, and pears, should also be avoided. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes and suitable snacks.
